How to Explain Your Experience of OCD to Others

“I have difficulty disconnecting from unwanted thoughts. I tend to think about these thoughts and perform behaviors repetitively in hopes of feeling better.”
“I am highly aware of potential catastrophes and find myself avoiding and performing behaviors to prevent these dreaded outcomes.”
“I am inundated with taboo thoughts that I find very distressing. This causes a cascade of stress that I attempt to reconcile with repetitive thoughts and behaviors that, unfortunately, only provide temporary relief but maintain my fears.”
“I am aware that my repetitive behaviors (compulsions) do not yield the results I seek; however, the distress I experience often feels too overwhelming to face and I fear that I will be irresponsible and something bad will happen if I don’t perform them.”
